Critical DOT Requirements

  • Verify UN marking visibility and match to product compatibility (packing group, material).
  • Retest/inspect per 49 CFR 180.352 (leakproofness every 30 months; periodic every 60 months).
  • Maintain test records for at least the container service life as required by DOT.
  • Apply correct hazard labels, markings, and shipping papers for each load.
  • Remove or cover obsolete placards and labels to prevent misidentification.

Common Violations to Avoid

  • Illegible or missing UN markings on bottle or cage.
  • Out-of-date leakproofness or periodic tests.
  • Mixed hazard labels from previous contents left in place.
  • Improper closure torque or missing tamper seals.
  • Using non-UN IBCs for regulated hazmat product.

Testing & Recordkeeping

Keep leakproofness and periodic test records with test dates, pressures, technician, and results. Retain for the container's service life. Ensure test marks are legible.
